Crystalens Presbyopia Correction

Crystalens™ Presbyopia Treatment - Chicago

Many patients who are interested in LASIK require correction for both distance and near vision. LASIK can satisfy the needs of many of these patients, but patients with specific occupations and hobbies find they need better near and intermediate vision than they can achieve with LASIK.

As a result, Dr. Sloane is proud to offer Chicago Crystalens patients this exciting alternative to LASIK.

Here's a look at how it works:

After a certain age (usually mid-40s) patients who previously only required glasses or contact lenses for distance, begin to experience difficulty with near vision. This is part of the normal aging process. As we age, our crystalline lens loses the ability to change focus from near, intermediate, and distance. This is called Presbyopia.

The Crystalens procedure is an alternative to bifocal, trifocal, and multifocal glasses or contact lenses. After the Crystalens surgical vision correction procedure, patients can focus seamlessly near, far, and in between the way the eye's natural lens does when we are young.

Dr. Sloane can correct distance vision and also restore near and intermediate vision to the way nature intended, reducing the need for glasses or contact lenses. This is the most complete answer for Presbyopia.

When treating a patient receiving Crystalens in Chicago, Dr. Sloane replaces the human crystalline lens with an intraocular lens implant. This surgery is similar to standard cataract surgery, (cataracts are part of the natural aging process and generally require surgical removal after age 65.) The Crystalens procedure can be performed on patients who do not yet have cataracts, but desire clear, seamless vision at all distances. After the Crystalens procedure, patients will not require cataract surgery later in life.

Dr. Sloane has achieved excellent results using with the Crystalens surgical vision correction procedure. Lifestyle enhancements include everything from reading to night driving, and even checking price tags without reading glasses. These are just some of the improvements our patients mention while describing the freedom surgical vision correction has provided them.

In addition to providing modern treatment for presbyopia, Dr. Herman Sloane is also an experienced Chicago laser eye surgery specialist who offers Z-Lasik and performs Custom LASIK in Chicago. Crystalens can also be used to help cataracts patients regain both near and distance vision after cataract surgery.

Cataract-ReSTOR IOL

ReSTOR Apodized Diffractive Lens (IOL) - Chicago

Introducing a breakthrough in vision surgery. Now there's a revolutionary new way to potentially leave your glasses behind - introducing the ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL), a breakthrough in vision surgery. ReSTOR has been uniquely designed to improve vision at all distances - up close, far away and everything in-between - giving cataract patients their best chance ever to live free of glasses.

Finally, the opportunity for freedom from reading glasses and bifocals.

Until recently, life without reading glasses or bifocals was not an option for most cataract patients. You now have an option. The ReSTOR is a unique technological innovation that can provide you with quality vision throughout the entire visual spectrum - near through distance - with increased independence from reading glasses or bifocals!

How does the ReSTOR work?

As we perform daily activities such as reading, watching television or working at the computer, our eyes are constantly focusing on objects at varying distances - up close, far away and everything in-between. The ability to quickly change focus throughout this range of vision is called accomodations. Unfortunately, this ability diminishes as we grow older1, causing us to become dependent on bifocals or reading glasses. However, the ReSTOR IOL was designed to provide quality near to distance vision by combining the strengths of apodized diffractive and refractive technologies. Similar technology has been used for years in microscopes and telescopes to improve image quality, and has now been patented for use in intraocular lenses by Alcon.

Apodized Diffractive

Apodization is the gradual tapering of the diffractive steps from the center to the outside edge of a lens to create a smooth transition of light between the distance, intermediate and near focal points. Diffraction involves the bending or spreading of light to multiple focal points as it passes through the lens. On the ReSTOR, the center of the lens surface consists of an apodized diffractive optic. This means that the series of tiny steps in that center area work together to focus light for near through distance vision.

Refractive

Refraction involves the redirection of light passing through the lens, to focus on the retina. The refractive region of the ReSTOR IOL bends light as it passes through the lens to a focal point on the retina. This outer ring of the ReSTOR surrounds the apodized diffractive region and is dedicated to focusing light for distance vision.

In addition to providing modern treatment for cataract surgerypatients, Dr. Herman Sloane is also an experience Chicago laser eye surgery specialist who offers Z-Lasik and performs Custom LASIK in Chicago.

Cataract-ReZoom IOL

ReZoom Multifocal Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) - Chicago

The ReZoom lens is a multifocal Intra Ocular Lens (IOL). ReZoom has multiple focal points so you can see well at a variety of distances. The ReZoom Mutlifocal lens is a clear, foldable implant made of high refractive index acrylic material. The entire procedure is performed through a micro-incision that does not require sutures.

During the procedure, the natural lens is removed and the ReZoom Multifocal lens replaces it. Vision is restored immediately in most cases; however, vision usually continues to improve in the weeks following the procedure.

A ReZoom patient can usually see clearly at distance, intermediate (computer or sheet music distance), and read in good light. For fine print, some patients will require reading glasses, some will not. Either way, ReZoom patients are among the happiest Sloane Vision Center treats. Often these patients have not seen without glasses for many years, if at all in their adult life.

Dr. Sloane offers the ReZoom IOL primarily for patients who visit his state-of-the-art cataract surgery Chicago offices. In addition to cataract surgery, he also offers treatment for Chicago LASIK, Z-Lasik, Crystalens and Custom LASIK patients.

CK / Conductive Keratoplasty

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) - Chicago

Dr. Herman Sloane has considerable experience helping Chicago conductive keratoplasty (CK) patients with their vision needs. Conductive keratoplasty is a procedure to improve your close work without the need for reading glasses. Here's how:

CK, or Conductive Keratoplasty, is a new surgical procedure which can modify the corneal tissue in order to alter the curvature of the cornea. This causes light rays from close-up objects to focus more accurately on the retina, thus compensating for presbyopia (farsightedness).

The nature of the corneal re-shaping that is achieved by CK creates an optical correction called "blended vision", meaning that the two eyes working together can achieve a blend of good distance vision and good near vision, at the same time, without the use of glasses.

A topical anesthetic is applied to the eye, then the doctor marks the intended treatment spots in a ring pattern on the cornea. Then, using a pen-shaped instrument, each spot is treated using a precisely controlled form of electrical energy. This energy causes a slight shrinkage of tissue inside the cornea, which in turn alters the curvature of the corneal surface.

During the procedure, slight pressure may be felt, however, it is not painful. It takes less than one second to treat each spot on the cornea, and the entire procedure takes about ten minutes.
